BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. — A Colerain man was taken into custody Monday morning after a homeowner reportedly caught him during a break-in and held him at gunpoint until a Bertie County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived.
According to the sheriff’s office, a deputy was dispatched at approximately 9:14 a.m. on Sept. 15 to a residence in the 200 block of Sally Freeman Road in Colerain for a reported breaking and entering in progress.
Authorities said the homeowner had the suspected intruder at gunpoint when the deputy arrived. The deputy took Carlton Moore, 44, of Colerain, into custody.
During the investigation, deputies identified Moore as a suspect in another residential break-in reported the previous week in the 200 block of Sally Freeman Road, according to the sheriff’s office.
Following Moore’s arrest, deputies searched his residence and reported finding property that had been stolen during the earlier break-in.
Moore was charged with two counts of breaking and entering, two counts of larceny after breaking and entering, and two counts of possession of stolen goods.
According to the sheriff’s office, Moore will be housed at the Durham County Jail.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
