RRGSD to Offer Public Tour of Armory Following Questions About Capital Grant Proposal

ROANOKE RAPIDS — Roanoke Rapids Graded School District will open the Armory to community members for a walk-through Thursday afternoon following public interest in plans that could eventually affect the building.

The district announced the tour after receiving communications regarding its Needs-Based Public Schools Capital Fund grant proposal, which was presented to and approved by the Halifax County Board of Commissioners earlier this week.

The tour is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24, at 4 p.m.

The Armory currently houses the Roanoke Rapids Early College.

According to RRGSD, the grant application seeks state funding for capital improvements and new construction at Roanoke Rapids High School and the Roanoke Rapids Early College.

District officials emphasized that approval of the grant application by county commissioners does not mean construction will immediately begin.

If the grant is awarded, additional steps would be required, including site planning, development of scale drawings, permit applications and other construction-related formalities.

During the commissioners meeting, county officials requested that the public have an opportunity to provide feedback on the project if the grant is awarded, according to the district.

“Recognizing that there has been some interest expressed from the community about the Armory, which is the current site of the RREC, we would like to offer a walk-through tour of the building to community members tomorrow, September 24th, at 4:00 PM,” the district said.

RRGSD has also held two community forums addressing district topics, issues and opportunities.

A third forum is scheduled for Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. at Belmont Elementary School.

The district encouraged residents with questions, concerns or feedback to attend and speak with district leaders about the capital proposal and other aspects of district operations.
