On Aug. 22 at approximately 1 p.m., Lt. Rackley of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office observed a verbal domestic altercation between a man and woman in the parking lot of a business on West 10th Street in Roanoke Rapids.

As Rackley approached the two to investigate, the woman drove away. Deputy Hicks was able to stop the vehicle.

According to the sheriff’s office, Hicks observed an open alcoholic beverage in a cup holder as he approached the vehicle and asked the driver, identified as Markarita Johnson, to exit. As Johnson got out, Hicks reportedly observed drug paraphernalia on the driver’s seat.

During the investigation, authorities allege Johnson provided her daughter’s identifying information as her own.

While searching the vehicle, Rackley located Johnson’s driver’s license. Deputies then learned Johnson had an outstanding warrant from the Roanoke Rapids Police Department charging her with felony obtaining property by false pretenses and felony possession of stolen goods.

Hicks arrested Johnson on the outstanding warrant and additionally charged her with felony identity theft, possession of drug paraphernalia and an open-container alcohol violation.

Johnson was also issued citations for driving while license revoked and displaying a fictitious license plate.

She received an $8,000 secured bond and a Sept. 23 court date.
