50-Year-Old Hollister Man Killed in Shooting at Highway 561 Convenience Store

A 50-year-old Hollister man was killed Sunday night in a shooting at a convenience store on Highway 561, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a convenience store in the 37,000 block of Highway 561 in Hollister at approximately 9:31 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, following a report of shots fired.

Responding deputies were advised that an individual at the scene had been shot. First responders arrived and began lifesaving measures, but the victim, identified as Joel Lynch, 50, of Hollister, died from his injuries at the scene.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a preliminary investigation determined that a large group of ATV riders was at the convenience store when the gunfire occurred.

Detectives are conducting interviews with numerous individuals as the investigation continues.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Detective Sgt. M. Hasty at 252-554-9733 or the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office at 252-583-1991. Tips may also be submitted to Halifax County Crime Stoppers at 252-583-4444.
