Republican representatives from North Carolina Senate District 1 have selected retired Superior Court Judge Jerry Tillett to fill the seat left vacant by the resignation of State Sen. Bobby Hanig.
Representatives from across the 10-county district met Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Currituck County Courthouse to select Hanig’s replacement.
The meeting was called by First Congressional District Republican Chairwoman Mary Helen Pelt Warren following Hanig’s resignation on Aug. 24.
Tillett was selected by acclamation to serve the remainder of Hanig’s current term in the North Carolina Senate.
According to Warren, the committee completed the process of filling the vacancy within six days of Hanig’s resignation.
Tillett is a retired Superior Court judge from Dare County and spent more than three decades on the bench. Earlier in his career, he served as chief of staff and chief legal counsel to the president pro tempore of the North Carolina Senate.
Tillett is also the Republican nominee for the Senate District 1 seat in the Nov. 3 general election.
Senate District 1 includes Bertie, Camden, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans and Tyrrell counties.
