A traffic stop Thursday near Roanoke Rapids resulted in the seizure of fentanyl, cocaine and oxycodone and the arrest of a 36-year-old man on drug charges.

According to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy D. Hicks was conducting traffic enforcement Oct. 1 along Highway 48 near Rhea Smith Road when he observed a traffic violation and stopped a vehicle.

During the encounter with the occupants, Hicks requested assistance from a K-9. Authorities said the K-9 gave a positive alert for the presence of narcotics during an open-air sniff of the vehicle.

During a search of Deunta Squire, 36, of Roanoke Rapids, deputies reported finding a container holding approximately 16.1 grams of fentanyl, 1.9 grams of cocaine and six oxycodone pills.

Squire was arrested and charged with trafficking in fentanyl, felony possession of cocaine and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance.

He was confined in the Halifax County Detention Center without bond and is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 21.

Community Action Team Sergeants T. Acree and D. Harrison, along with K-9 Loki, assisted with the investigation.
