A Tarboro man is facing multiple charges after Scotland Neck police say a burglary and assault investigation Thursday evening led to a vehicle pursuit through residential neighborhoods, private yards and along Main Street.
Officers with the Scotland Neck Police Department responded to the 1400 block of Greenwood Street at approximately 7:35 p.m. on October 8 for a reported burglary and assault.
Police said the suspect, identified as Joseph Bellamy of Tarboro, had left the scene before officers arrived.
While officers were speaking with the victim and gathering information, they spotted Bellamy in a vehicle matching the description provided by the victim. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but police said Bellamy failed to stop and a pursuit began.
According to the department, Bellamy traveled through residential neighborhoods and along Main Street, reaching speeds of approximately 65 mph in posted 25 mph zones. Police said Bellamy also drove through private yards, causing property damage, and collided with another vehicle on Roanoke Street.
The pursuit ended on Grasunan Road near Main Street after a tire on Bellamy’s vehicle went flat. Police said the vehicle was seized pursuant to the state’s “Run and Done” law.
Bellamy was arrested and taken before a Halifax County magistrate. He was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, speeding, failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to maintain lane control, failure to reduce speed causing a collision, first-degree burglary, misdemeanor stalking and two counts of misdemeanor assault.
Police said Bellamy was denied bond pending his first appearance. His court date was set for November 10.
No serious injuries were reported.
The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office assisted Scotland Neck police during the investigation.
