Halifax County Sheriff Tyree Davis was among those recognized Friday night by the Rosalene M. Moore Cancer Awareness Foundation, Inc. for leadership, courage and service to the citizens of Halifax County.
Davis said the recognition was particularly meaningful because of his own family’s experience with cancer.
His father was diagnosed with cancer while Davis was in elementary school and died from the disease by the time Davis reached the sixth grade.
“That was my first encounter with the devastating impact of cancer and the pain it brings, not only to the person diagnosed, but also to their family, friends, and the entire community,” Davis said.
While honored by the recognition, Davis credited the employees of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and described the award as a team effort.
“We have a great team at the sheriff’s office that’s dedicated to serving Halifax County,” Davis said.
The Rosalene M. Moore Cancer Awareness Foundation works to raise awareness and provide support to cancer patients and their families through educational resources, community programs and efforts promoting cancer prevention and early detection.
Friday night’s event also recognized cancer survivors, remembered those who have died from the disease and honored local leaders for their service to the community.
Davis said cancer awareness is an issue that reaches across the community because so many families have been affected by the disease.
“Whether through the loss of a loved one, the journey of a survivor, or the struggles of someone we know and care about, none of us is completely untouched by this disease,” Davis said.
Davis thanked the foundation for its continued work and congratulated the other honorees, cancer survivors and those who support cancer awareness efforts throughout the community.
