Traffic stop in Garysburg leads to cocaine charge, fugitive arrest

GARYSBURG — An Aug. 27 traffic stop in Garysburg led to a cocaine arrest, the apprehension of a Virginia fugitive and citations for the driver, according to the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy J. Johnson stopped a black sedan in the 6700 block of N.C. Highway 46 after recognizing the driver as 66-year-old Stanley Lee Boone of Garysburg and knowing his license was revoked, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Two passengers in the vehicle were identified as Monique Danielle Britt, 48, and Demetrick Lavez Clark, 48, both of Garysburg.

Authorities determined Britt was wanted on an outstanding order for arrest for failure to appear in Greensville County, Virginia. The Sheriff’s Office said the underlying charge was felony possession of a Schedule I or II controlled substance and Britt had failed to appear in court Feb. 12.

During the traffic stop investigation, Clark told deputies he was in possession of marijuana, according to the release. A subsequent probable cause search of the vehicle reportedly resulted in the seizure of approximately 1 gram of marijuana and 4 grams of crack cocaine.

Clark was arrested and charged with felony possession of cocaine, felony possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine and misdemeanor possession of up to one-half ounce of marijuana.

He was held without bond due to a pretrial integrity hold and was given an Aug. 29 Northampton County court date.

Britt was served with the Virginia fugitive order for arrest and was also held without bond. She was given a previously scheduled Sept. 3 court date in Northampton County.

Boone was cited for no liability insurance, expired registration and driving while license revoked. He was released.

Northampton County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Detective M. Deloatch and Deputy B. Davis assisted Johnson during the investigation. Garysburg Police Department Lt. M. Walton also assisted.

Sheriff Jack Smith commended Johnson for his vigilance and efforts during the investigation, adding that removing illegal drugs from circulation helps reduce their availability and potential harm to the community.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
