An armed suspect accused of stealing a Mercedes-Benz was taken into custody Thursday following a 15-mile pursuit through Halifax County, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said Deputy D. Bybee responded to the Weldon area on June 18 after receiving information regarding a Mercedes-Benz that had reportedly been stolen from a business in Whitakers.
When Deputy Bybee attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly refused to comply and fled, leading deputies on a pursuit that continued for approximately 15 miles.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the driver, later identified as Tyrone Williams, 29, of the Fayetteville area, reached speeds of approximately 90 mph in a 45 mph zone during the pursuit. Authorities allege Williams passed vehicles in no-passing zones, ran stop signs and traffic lights, drove between vehicles in traffic, and operated the vehicle with reckless disregard for public safety.
The pursuit ended after Corporal Wilson successfully deployed tire deflation devices, causing two tires on the vehicle to slowly lose air and eventually disable the Mercedes.
Authorities said Williams then exited the vehicle and fled on foot while carrying a handgun. Deputies located him a short time later in a wooded area and took him into custody without further incident.

Williams was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm, resisting, obstructing, or delaying an officer, driving while license revoked, and felony fleeing to elude a motor vehicle.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Williams received a court date of July 22, 2026. He was held without bond because he was reportedly already out on bond for other pending charges at the time of his arrest.
The Sheriff’s Office credited members of Patrol A Squad, the Halifax County Regional Drug and Gang Units, the Criminal Investigations Division, and the Weldon Police Department for assisting with the pursuit and apprehension.
