Buc-ee’s is looking to bring one of its massive travel centers to Rocky Mount, with the company under contract to purchase approximately 34 acres near Interstate 95.
The Roanoke Valley Reporter contacted the City of Rocky Mount’s Development Services office Thursday and independently confirmed Buc-ee’s interest in developing the property. A Development Services representative said the city would not issue a public statement regarding the proposed project until after a neighborhood informational meeting scheduled for October 22.
According to an October 12 letter from Buc-ee’s Director of Real Estate and Development Stan Beard, the company is under contract to purchase approximately 34 acres in the southwestern quadrant of the N.C. Highway 4, also known as Halifax Road, interchange with I-95.
The property consists of four separate parcels identified as 017774, 019357, 019915 and 019341.
“Our goal is to develop and open a Buc-ee’s store on the above property assemblage,” Beard wrote.
The proposed travel center would include retail and food operations, vehicle fuel sales and electric vehicle charging stations.
Buc-ee’s said it is working with the City of Rocky Mount on plans for the development and has applied to rezone the entire 34-acre assemblage to the B-2 zoning district. Three of the four parcels are already within that zoning district, according to the company.
The rezoning request is expected to go before the Rocky Mount Planning Board on November 10.
Before that hearing, Buc-ee’s plans to hold a neighborhood informational meeting Thursday, October 22, at 6 p.m. at the Frederick E. Turnage Municipal Building, 331 S. Franklin Street in Rocky Mount. The meeting will be held in the Development Services Conference Room on the first floor.
The company said the meeting will provide information about the project and give residents an opportunity to ask questions about the proposal.
Buc-ee’s described the proposed development as an economic development opportunity for Rocky Mount and Nash County that would provide additional retail and dining options.
The October 12 letter was sent to neighboring property owners and signed by Beard. Copies were also listed as being provided by email to Rocky Mount Mayor C. Saunders Roberson, Mayor Pro-Tem Jabaris D. Walker and Seth Bocook.
