ROANOKE RAPIDS — A Friday morning search of a Zoo Road North residence resulted in the seizure of suspected drugs, cash and the arrest of a man authorities say has previously been the target of a narcotics investigation at the same property.
On October 16, agents with the Halifax Regional Drug and Gang Task Force concluded an investigation stemming from recent complaints of illegal narcotics being sold from a residence on Zoo Road North in the Roanoke Rapids area.
Authorities identified Matthew “Speedy” Garner as the target of the investigation. Agents obtained a search warrant for the residence and, with assistance from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and Community Action Team, secured the home before conducting a search.
According to authorities, agents seized suspected cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana, various prescription pills, drug paraphernalia and U.S. currency.
Garner was arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine, felony possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, felony maintaining a dwelling, misdemeanor possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, simple possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Garner received a $45,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court on October 21.
Prior Search at Same Residence
According to the Task Force, Friday’s search was not its first investigation involving Garner and the Zoo Road North residence.
In December 2022, agents served a narcotics-related search warrant at the same property. Garner was arrested at that time on multiple drug-related charges.
The Halifax Regional Drug and Gang Task Force consists of deputies from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Roanoke Rapids Police Department. The agencies say the partnership provides additional manpower and resources for drug and gang investigations throughout Halifax County.
