A Roanoke Rapids man faces multiple drug charges following a traffic stop conducted by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Community Action Team on Interstate 95.
According to authorities, Community Action Team Sgt. D. Harrison conducted a traffic stop Saturday, June 13, near the 167-mile marker on Interstate 95 southbound for an alleged traffic violation.
During the stop, Harrison reportedly observed the driver, later identified as Maryo Plum, 28, of Roanoke Rapids, making movements that deputies believed were consistent with concealing items inside the vehicle. Harrison requested assistance from Community Action Team Sgt. G. Martin.
Authorities said that after Martin arrived on scene, Plum was asked to exit the vehicle so a K-9 deployment could be conducted. As Plum exited the vehicle, deputies reported detecting the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, a search of Plum resulted in the discovery of a medicine bottle concealed on his person. Deputies reported finding two baggies containing approximately 17.5 grams of suspected cocaine, along with 32 pills believed to be a mixture of Xanax and Clonazepam.
A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly resulted in the discovery of marijuana and a scale.
Plum was arrested and charged with possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for controlled substances, possession of marijuana, two counts of simple possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to maintain lane control.
Jail records indicate Plum was confined to the Halifax County Detention Center under no bond and was scheduled to appear in court on June 17.
