Three men have been charged in connection with a Sept. 27 homicide at a housing complex on McDowell Road in Scotland Neck, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Rashawn Smith is charged with second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit second-degree murder. Adam Dickens and Denzel McDaniel are each charged with conspiracy to commit second-degree murder and accessory after the fact.

Deputies and investigators responded to the McDowell Road housing complex on Sept. 27 following a reported homicide. Investigators began gathering evidence and working to identify those believed to be involved.

Later that day, investigators executed search warrants at two locations in Scotland Neck. Dickens and McDaniel were found at one of the properties and arrested on charges of possession of a firearm by a felon. Both were taken to the Halifax County Detention Center and held without bond.

The searches were conducted with assistance from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team, Scotland Neck Police Department and Nash County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team.

The investigation continued during the following week with assistance from the FBI Raleigh-Durham Safe Streets Task Force and Scotland Neck Police Department.

Investigators ultimately developed probable cause for homicide-related charges against Smith, Dickens and McDaniel. Warrants were obtained Oct. 2.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, investigators later developed information indicating Smith was hiding at his residence. The FBI SWAT team was requested to assist in taking him into custody.

In the early morning hours of Oct. 8, FBI SWAT personnel and the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Smith at his residence without incident.

All three men have now been served with the warrants related to the homicide and are being held at the Halifax County Detention Center without bond. They are scheduled to appear in court Oct. 21.

The Sheriff’s Office credited cooperation among local, regional and federal agencies with assisting the investigation and arrests, including the Halifax Regional Drug and Gang Task Force, Nash County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team, Scotland Neck Police Department, FBI Raleigh-Durham Safe Streets Task Force and FBI SWAT.
